Destroying hard drives...
At the end of the day, when it comes to destroying hard drives, I'm just trying to prevent anyone from obtaining any data from them.

One way to destroy the drive is to drill holes through it.  If you have the occasional drive that you need to destroy, this may work for you.  I run an IT business and come across too many drives to destroy this way though.  I prefer to disassemble them.
Taking the drive apart.
The only tool that I needed was a Kobalt 8-in-1 Precision TORX Head Screwdriver set... less than $20 at Lowes.
Step 1 of 2
Remove the 7 or 8 Torx screws that hold the cover on.  There may be one or two hidden under the info label.  Supposedly once the cover is removed the dust in the air alone has ruined the drive... but, keep going.
Step 2 of 2
There are 7, possibly 8, more screws to remove... there may be 1 or 2 (which is why the screw count is 7 or 8) screws holding the read/write head in place.
Still step 2...
This is a shot with the hub and read/write arm fastener removed.
Final
The platter can now be lifted off of the spindle and done with as you may.  I rub them on the sidewalk... you ain't reading nothin from that disk.
